Furman Symphony Orchestra

At Furman, you don't have to compete with graduate students for a spot in the orchestra. The Furman Symphony Orchestra is one of only a handful in the country that is composed entirely of undergraduate students. The orchestra, which consists of 80+ members, presents four to five performances each year including two performances with Oratorio Chorus and a biannual Concerto Competition program. Members also have the opportunity to participate in lyric theatre and opera production pit orchestras. The FSO is open to majors and non-majors by audition. Wind, percussion, harp and piano assignments are based on need and determined by audition. For more information, contact Thomas Joiner.

Jazz Ensemble

Performing the best of big band literature in jazz, Latin and fusion, the jazz ensemble performs for audiences across South Carolina. Outstanding guitar, bass, drum set and jazz piano students team up with saxophone, trombone and trumpet sections to prepare several performances throughout the year. As part of the jazz program, quartets and small combos branch out to explore literature for smaller ensembles with more varied instrumentation. The band is open to music majors and non-majors, but auditions are required. Jazz coordinator and director: Matt Olson. Learn more.
