Oboist Petrea Warneck performs extensively throughout the Carolinas as an orchestral and chamber musician. She is a member of South Carolina Philharmonic and is often called upon to perform with the Charlotte, Charleston and Greenville Symphony Orchestras as substitute musician.   She has a distinguished reputation as an oboe instructor in the southeast. Covering the Carolinas from east to west, she has a private studio at home in Columbia and she is the oboe instructor at Furman University and the SC Governor’s School for the Arts in Greenville, SC.   In past years taught oboe at USC-Columbia, Presbyterian College (Clinton, SC), and the UNC-Wilmington.

A native of New York State, Ms. Warneck has had an active career in the field of arts management, first in NYC and then in Berlin, Germany, where she resided for 5 years.  Upon returning to the U.S. in 1995 she co-founded The Chamber Music Society of Wilmington (NC) and served as the executive director for the first decade of the series.  She continues her affiliation with the organization as its’ Principal Oboist and Executive Director Emeritus.

Ms. Warneck is passionately involved in the performance of new music for her instrument.  In 2006 she commissioned a work for solo oboe by Mark Kilstofte, entitled “Inner Voices”, which she premiered at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Ithaca, NY in July 2007.  The piece is a tribute to the legendary oboist, John Mack - former principal oboist of the Cleveland Orchestra and Ms. Warneck’s teacher and mentor of over 25 years.  She credits his influence and teaching pedagogy for her continual development as a musician and educator throughout her career.

Ms. Warneck obtained a Master’s degree from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor’s degree from the Ithaca College School of Music (under the tutelage of Rebecca Nagel and Peter Hedrick respectively). Other former teachers/coaches include Elaine Douvas, Linda Strommen and Melanie Wilsden. Ms. Warneck continues post-graduate training with Dr. Mark Ostoich at the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati (CCM), where she is also a frequent Guest Lecturer in Oboe.  Alongside oboe teaching and study, Ms. Warneck is a Trainee in a three-year Certification Course in the Alexander Technique.
