ENSEMBLE PLACEMENT

For accepted and current students attending Furman fall of 2013.  All of our ensembles are open to music majors and skilled non-majors.  Except for the Marching Band, every ensemble requires an audition to determine specific ensemble assignment and, for the instrumentalists, seating order.

Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Excerpts

A string bass player will be selected by the string faculty in consultation with Dr. Hicken.  Audition for the string faculty - see below.

Jazz Excerpts

Rhythm Section (Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums)

You do NOT need to be an improvising musician to audition for the jazz ensembles!!! Our jazz auditions are designed to be a low-key way for us to accurately assess your experience level as a jazz musician. Even if you have had LITTLE or NO experience in jazz, please feel free to audition. We will do our very best to include everyone we can in our program!

Symphony Orchestra String Excerpts

Brass, Woodwind and Percussion members are selected and seated based on the Wind Ensemble auditions - see first column to the left.  Instrumentation roster is determined by repertoire.

Harp and piano positions are selected by the respective teachers in consultation with Dr. Joiner.

Choral Ensembles

No excerpts required!  Your audition is primarily vocalizing to determine range and tone.  Come prepared to sing a selection of your choice.

If you are on vocal music scholarship, you do not need to re-audition.  You will be placed in the Singers or Chorale based on your prior voice audition.  If you are not on music scholarship or have not yet auditioned for the choir directors, then we want to hear you in the fall.  See info sheet linked at the top of this page for date and time specifics.

Instrumentalists fulfilling their music education requirement should also audition in the fall.
