UNIVERSITY ADMISSION
|
|
|
The Furman Music Department requires auditions for students who wish to begin study in the music major degree track or wish consideration for
music scholarship
support (majors and non-majors). Auditions are held during an
applicant's senior year in high school or the year prior to college
transfer.
A separate application form is required for a music audition. See links to the right.
Applicants must have a complete university application on file with the Office of Admissions prior to auditioning for the music department. Music awards and decisions are announced AFTER university acceptance is announced.
The specially planned
Audition Weekends, Friday
evening - Saturday afternoon, offer you and your parents the
opportunity to attend a major performance Friday night and talk with music faculty and
students at a special luncheon. The
required part of the weekend will be your performance audition /
interview / music aptitude evaluation and the music theory placement tests. Saturday is the
preferred day. Since faculty availability is limited, special requests for Friday afternoon auditions will be
considered on a case-by-case basis.
Review the Audition CRITERIA
Due to the unrehearsed portion of the audition,
live auditions are preferred and
given preference in deliberations,
but, if distance or unavoidable conflict does not permit you to travel
to Furman during one of the designated weekends, please submit a
VIDEO (DVD) or AUDIO (CD or MP3) to the music department for preliminary consideration and approval - you will take the placement tests in the Fall. Complete and enclose the Music Audition Application Form
with your recording. If emailing MP3 files, scan and include the application as an attachment. Both recordings and live auditions must meet the
audition criteria.
For scholarship consideration, both majors and non-majors are welcome to audition. Majors receive priority consideration. A
limited number of small non-major participation scholarships are awarded
yearly based on department need. Students
desiring to study and perform on more than one instrument may audition
on two instruments. Example: voice (primary) and piano (secondary). Please submit separate
application forms for each.
Accompanists:
Instrumental auditions do not need an accompanist, so Furman does not supply an accompanist for instrumentalists.
Vocal auditions
require an accompanist either supplied by you or, with
advance request, supplied by Furman at no cost to you. Our staff accompanist will rehearse with you 15 minutes prior to the audition then walk with you to the vocal audition room. The use of recorded accompaniments is not
appropriate.
