Mary Grant began her career at Furman in 1998. In addition to teaching Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Intermediate Spanish, Mary directed the Study Away Program in Madrid (2004 and 2005) and co-directed the May X Program in Guatemala (2011). 

Prior to teaching at Furman she spent 12 years at Michelin Tire Corporation at their North American headquarters in Greenville. There she was employed as a Spanish and ESOL (English as a Second Language) teacher at the Michelin French School. She also was a language teacher at Greenville High School, Hillcrest High School, and Christ Church Episcopal School – all in Greenville, South Carolina.

Additional activities and interests:

Volunteer as a Spanish instructor for the Furman University OLLI Program (Adult Education).
Volunteer as a Spanish instructor of elementary children at the St. Anthony’s Catholic School. 
Volunteer at the Greenville Humane Society.
Board member of The Chris & Kelly HOPE Foundation – a non-profit fundraising organization dedicated to the treatment of adolescent addiction.

Elementary Spanish I

Introduction to the sound system and grammatical structure necessary to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Spanish. An appreciation of Spanish-speaking culture underlies the orientation of the course.


Elementary Spanish II

Continuation of the skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) developed in first elementary course, with increased emphasis on vocabulary expansion, idiomatic expression, and cultural differences.

My objective is to show my students how relevant the Spanish language and culture are in our world and local communities and get them excited about the tangible benefits they will realize by learning this beautiful language. 

I endeavor to create a classroom environment that is all-inclusive and welcoming – as opposed to competitive or intimidating – in an effort to motivate my students to engage and learn. 

My passion for the Spanish language and culture is evident and I love to share it with my students. I have found the greatest teaching success by employing a balanced approach in the classroom – using creative and less traditional methods while adhering to the course syllabus.
