German Civilization

Advanced intermediate level introduction to the culture and civilization of the major German speaking areas of Europe. The goal is an understanding and appreciation of the contemporary civilization and its historical development.

My chief professional pursuit is that of Engaged Learning. Through active classroom interaction, mentoring by personal example, and relating broad experiences gained outside the academy back into the University experience, I am seeking to:

  • bolster retention among language majors, serving as a reaffirming example of the relevance of the language arts and the time-tested value of a "classical education"
  • for non-language-majors, reaffirm the utility of the liberal arts and "classical education" in the broader context of personal and professional advancement, in an economy and a society that never cease to evolve and challenge.

Classroom teaching and mentoring is my life's calling. Judging from student and peer feedback, my efforts are well received, and are making a real difference in the lives of my students.
