I completed my B.A. in Comparative Literature at Barnard College in 2005. As a graduate student at the University of Virginia, I discovered my love of teaching. I earned my M.A. in Spanish in 2007.

During my teaching career, I have taught a variety of language classes as well as courses on Latin American film and literary analysis.

I have spent my entire professional career in education in great part motivated by the mentoring that I received in college through the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program, which seeks to increase faculty diversity in institutions of higher learning. Peers and faculty members encouraged me to pursue my passion for public service through a career in academia.

I gained experience in student affairs and teacher development through my work as Interim Director of the Spanish and Italian Language Programs at the University of Virginia. As I served in this position, I regularly interacted with students, teachers, and members of the administration to help manage matters related to evaluating student progress, developing course materials, and mentoring new instructors.

I traveled often to Chile as a child to visit family. In college, I participated in a summer study abroad program in Cuzco, Perú.

Name Title Description

Elementary Spanish I

Introduction to the sound system and grammatical structure necessary to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Spanish. An appreciation of Spanish-speaking culture underlies the orientation of the course.

Intensive Elementary Spanish

Designed to prepare students with some background in Spanish for the first intermediate level course.

Elementary Spanish II

Continuation of the skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) developed in first elementary course, with increased emphasis on vocabulary expansion, idiomatic expression, and cultural differences.

Intermediate Spanish I

Continuation of the development of proficiency in listening and speaking, while expanding the reading and writing skills.

I am dedicated to exploring ways to work in conjunction with students to create a stimulating learning environment, because I regard learning as a collaborative process undertaken by student and teacher. I strive to engage students by incorporating culture into language courses through the use of music, film, and works of literature. In class, I provide students with ample opportunities to work and interact with one another. I also encourage students to explore topics reflective of their interests for class projects. I'm always eager to see the outcome of these efforts to converge the diverse interests of students with their study of a new language. I believe that each person contributes in an important and unique way to the learning experience of his or her peers.
