Research and Internship Opportunities Furman University

Furman supports a thriving culture of undergraduate research. When you're a modern languages and literatures major, you can work closely with mentors and faculty members to research topics you're passionate about, whether at home or abroad.

  • Spanish

      Santiago

The study away program in Santiago gives students the exciting opportunity to conceive and carry out a research project touching any element of Chilean culture in the country's capital city. As part of SPN-470, Senior Seminar in Spanish, you will develop a vision for understanding, researching, and bringing an aspect of this culture to light for yourself and others, culminating with your own presentations and workshops.

      Madrid

As a participant in the Madrid study away program, you have the opportunity to take short or long trips to various cities throughout Spain, letting yourself be shaped by weekly art classes in the Prado Museum or attending live theatre. Faculty members will guide you in creating an independent research project that engages and illuminates.

  • French

Furman's French language program includes a study away trip to Senegal. This program exposes you to vital topics, such as the role of women in this African country. Visiting a women's organization or touring an eco-village can become touchstones to spark your own research projects and interviews. You will also have the chance to spend a rural weekend with a Peace Corps volunteer or a worker in an NGO (non-governmental organization)..

  • Linguistics

For LNG-504, Directed Independent Study, you can choose a research project that challenges and excites you, knowing faculty will be behind you every step of the way to offer mentorship and collaboration. Perhaps you will publish your work online or create a dynamic multimedia presentation. However you design your curriculum, your education will be enriched and expanded..
