Global Experience Furman University

At Furman, the global experience is the central mission of the Modern Languages and Literatures department, and each year we accompany up to 70 students on study away trips. We provide you with opportunities to travel thousands of miles across the world for unforgettable learning adventures that will shape the rest of your life. You can choose to take part in one of six study abroad programs of a semester or more, five of which are faculty-led, continuing your distinctive Furman education while away.

The May Experience offerings include shorter, three-week study away programs that allow students to earn two credits while exploring relevant topics and cultures. Current May Experiences include a trip to Italy to investigate sustainable food practices, an adventure in Germany including small-town and big-city perspectives, and a projected excursion to the Catalunya region of eastern Spain.

  • Explore Germany

This semester-long program gives you the opportunity to stay in Germany's exciting multicultural capital. The diverse offerings are led by experts and include subjects such as 20th-century art, Islam and Europe, transatlantic relations, comparative literature, film studies, and Berlin architecture.

The program includes an educational tour of China that in recent years has featured visits to Beijing, the Great Wall, Xi'an, Dunhuang, Tibet, Chengdu, Wulingyuan Scenic Area, Guilin, and Huangshan. You'll be assigned a Chinese roommate and have the opportunity to participate in a substantive internship. The program includes a home stay experience and field trips in and around Suzhou.

  • Slow Food Italy
  •

This May Experience study away program provides an introduction to the principles and practices of the Slow Food movement which has its origins in Italy.  After a campus orientation and classes, students travel to Rome to discover Italian food culture, then on to an organic farm in Sora where reading, writing and discussion of sustainable and healthy food production and consumption continues. We  observe traditional Italian ways of growing and making food and envision how these might be implemented in daily life back here in America.
