July 29, 2008 Furman Hosts International Research Conference
More than 65 student presentations were given on the Furman campus by
students from across three continents including presenters from
Furman, the
University of Florida, the
Universite’ Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris, France
), the
University Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France)
, Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil), the
Universidade Federal de São Carlos, (São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil) and the
Institute de Quimica-UNESP
(Araraquara, São Paulo, Brazil). Forty of these presentations were
from Furman students in four different departments including Chemistry,
Biology, Psychology, and Health and Exercise Science.
Participation in this unique international undergraduate research
conference on the Furman campus was outstanding with more than 150
students, faculty and staff viewing the posters, and 125 attending the
“standing room only” Plenary Lecture given by Professor Lorenzo Stievano
of the
Universite’ Pierre et Marie Curie (
Paris 6, Paris, France). In addition to HHMI
Science for Life
students who traveled from UF to participate, UF, Furman and
international students sponsored by NSF-REU and NIH-INBRE were also
involved in this unique scientific exchange.

sponsored NSF-REU, the Merck Foundation, NIH-INBRE and HHMI. Sixty-two
student presentations were given by students from 8 universities across
France, Brazil and the University of Florida and Furman.
