The Institute for the Advancement of Community Health was established at Furman during the Spring of 2016. It grew out of the partnership Furman had established with the Greenville Health System as well as other community partners. The Institute provides a point of convening for policy, education, research and community engagement in medicine and health.

As a liberal arts institution, Furman has been ahead of the recent movement and challenge to incorporate coursework outside of the basic sciences while preparing for graduate medical education in health careers. Longstanding programs like The Medicine Program directed by Drs. Epright and Maher, is just one example of how Furman provides opportunities for students to consider the challenges that face patients well beyond the physician’s office. With the development of the IACH, programs will now have more opportunities for collaboration across the campus and the community which will improve communication for faculty and students alike.
