As a place with mind-numbing diversity of religious, ethnic, linguistic, political, and socio-cultural features, India offers a rich and complex intellectual journey. For Furman, India represents a new initiative. The successful Winter 2008 was the inaugural year for Furman's India program. It continues to be the aim of the India program that Furman students will act not as passive observers as if India is a spectacle to be viewed, experienced, and consumed. Instead, program directors will ensure that Furman students will enter substantive engagements over perspectives and ways of thinking about the past, the present, and the future of India.

The world's largest democracy, home to some of the oldest human civilizations, an important player in a burgeoning global economy, second most populated country in the world: these are just a few of the hyperbolic features of India. The India Program begins with academic training on Furman's campus, followed by a residential experience at Madras Christian College, Chennai India, and travel to north and south India.
