Study Away Programs
Furman's inaugural India study abroad trip took place in Winter 2008. Here is the Furman group at the guest house of Madras Christian College, one of the top ranked colleges in India. Following a study tour around North and South India, students began their residential program in Madras. Our next trip is scheduled for Fall 2013. Visit the
website for information on future trips and highlights from past trips.
The professors define this program as a "traveling academic seminar." The group moves steadily from Mexico down to Nicaragua, gaining constant access to new places and people. Assignments are read en route followed by exams. Along with much discussion they receive various lectures from invited guests, ranging from academics and grassroots activists to everyday people. They have also done service learning projects in Suchitoto, El Salvador. So while the emphasis of the trip is on serious academic inquiry, we also try to give something back with our labor. Our groups stay together for much of the trip, because we are a traveling seminar, however we also like to give participants time to venture on their own and meet people independently. Dr. Don Gordon of Furman's Political Science Department began the Africa program in 1983 and has taken students to Africa every other year since. Furman students spend six weeks in Southern Africa, mainly in South Africa. In 2000, Dr. Erik Ching of the History Department began to serve as co-coordinator of the program. Dr. Gordon and Dr. Ching have co-led the four past trips in 2000, 2003, 2005, and 2007.
