The goal of the History Department at Furman University is to increase a student’s understanding of the present through a critical examination of the past.
With a firm foundation in the liberal arts, our program exposes students to a wide range of geographical regions and time periods, civilizations and cultures. Our dedicated faculty are award-winning teachers and widely-published scholars who help students understand how to investigate and interpret historical events through intensive coursework, undergraduate research, and study away experiences. From designing museum exhibits to actively engaging scholars in a research setting, our history majors gain a deeper appreciation of the human experience, preparing them for a wide variety of careers.
