Dr. Elizabeth Holt is an epidemiologist with a background in environmental public health and preventive health. She focuses on the prevention and management of chronic disease, specifically asthma and cardiovascular disease. As a researcher, she has investigated social and environmental factors associated with asthma among children living in urban areas. More recently her work has been focused in the health care setting. She currently examines factors impacting clinical outcomes and quality of life among patients with chronic disease.

Dr. Holt holds a strong commitment to research and education surrounding current issues in environmental and public health. Her academic and teaching interests have been influenced by her time researching environmental and health outcomes in post-Katrina New Orleans as well has her service with Teach for America in New Mexico and New Orleans, LA. Dr. Holt is a Greenville native, and in her down time she enjoys exploring the beautiful mountains and waterways of the SC upstate with her family.

Seminar in Public Health

The seminar is designed to understand and analyze key issues in public health research and practice. Topics include contemporary public health issues, the relevance and intersection of multiple disciplines on public health, and skills needed to impact the health of the population.


Wellness Concepts

Wellness concepts which promote lifetime fitness and healthy lifestyle habits. Topics include: aerobic and muscular conditioning, nutrition, and medical aspects of fitness. Participation in activities to develop cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.


Research & Evaluation in HSC

Principles of research relevant to health and exercise science focusing on study design, measurement, and statistical techniques used in the analysis and interpretation of data from population based and human performance studies. Statistical software functions and communication techniques are included. It is recommended that this course be enrolled early in the major.


Environmental Health

An overview of major environmental health issues, including air quality, municipal and hazardous waste, cancer and radiation, drinking water quality, wastewater, agriculture and foodborne illness, environmental justice, and susceptible populations. The use of risk assessment and toxicology as the scientific basis for policy decisions will be discussed. Exploration of emerging environmental health problems in industrialized and developing countries will be included.

Dr. Holt has investigated environmental factors associated with asthma among children living in urban areas. She also researches factors impacting clinical outcomes and quality of life among patients with chronic disease. In collaboration with colleagues, her work has been published in a number of scientific journals including: American Journal of Epidemiology, Environmental Health Perspectives, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Annals of Behavioral Medicine, Journal of Hypertension, and Hypertension.
