History

The naming of this academic year as the Year of Global Citizenship (YGC) is the result of a year-long process initiated and led by students. A core group of students began meeting to look for ways to promote a greater awareness on our campus of global issues. Their coursework at Furman and on travel-study had highlighted for them a daunting array of challenges facing the world. The students met with former Provost Kazee who encouraged them to propose programming to address their concerns.

After consulting with many faculty members over the course of the 2009-10 year, the students wrote and presented to President’s Council a proposal that the following academic year (2010-11) be named “The Year of Global Citizenship.” As part of the proposal, the students developed a spectrum of potential curricular and co-curricular programs that would take place during the year. It is the hope of the students and of the steering committee that the YGC will serve as a model, beyond the coming academic year, for an ongoing “global issues forum” that will have different themes in coming years.
