Awards

In the English Department, we are pleased to offer annually a number of awards and scholarships that recognize the academic achievement and creative writing talent of our majors. 

The Pipkin Award

The Pipkin Award was established in 1969 by the late Mr. Willis Benton Pipkin of Reidsville, North Carolina, in memory of his father, a Furman alumnus, and of his sister, who taught English at the Greenville Woman's College. The Pipkin Award is presented by the English Department to a senior who is majoring in English. The Award takes the form of a scholarship which is given solely on the basis of merit. The L.D. Johnson Scholarship

The L. D. Johnson Scholarship is awarded to a student who shows promise in creative writing. Furman owes the award to the generosity of Mrs. E. A. Ramsaur, who established a fund administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Greenville. The award was established in memory of Dr. L. D. Johnson, who was Chaplain of the University from 1967 until his death in 1981. Recent recipients:

The Mattie Hipp Cunningham Scholarship

This award, established by G. Watts Cunningham in memory of his wife Mattie Hipp Cunningham, is awarded annually to the student or students who show greatest promise in appreciation of, or creativity in, literature and fine arts. The English Department awards this scholarship every third year, alternating with the Department of Art and the Department of Drama. Recent recipients:

The J. Decherd Guess Scholarship Fund

The J. Decherd Guess Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 to award one or more annual scholarships to full-time Furman students selected by the faculty in the Department of English. Recent recipients:

The Courtenay Poetry Prize

The Courtney Poetry Prize was established in 1981 in memory of Margaret Beattie Courtenay. It is awarded to a student for outstanding work in writing poetry. Recent recipients:

The Ann Sharp Award Fund

The Rudolph Bates Award

The Rudolph Bates Award was established in honor of Dr. Rudolph Bates, a former member of the Furman English Department. The award is presented each year to a student who demonstrates special interest and competence in the study of Victorian literature. Recent recipients:
