Why Study Teacher Education at Furman?
Founded on the central principles of the liberal arts, Furman's nationally-recognized Teacher Education program prepares teachers to be
scholars and leaders in their field. You'll be developing not only teaching skills, but also learning how to make decisions and reflect on important topics that will enable you to adapt and shape different learning environments.
"Furman's Teacher Education Program not only prepared me to be an exemplary teacher, but it also connected me with my passion to help youth, which makes learning more meaningful."
-- Bernard Frost '05, Ph.D., District Math Specialist at Spartanburg County Schools, Teacher of the Year 2013-2014 and recipient of SCMSA Magic Teacher Award
Our challenging senior yearlong coursework and field experience and fifth-year internship program involve extensive mentoring and classroom teaching experience. This program, the Teacher to Teacher Residency Program, is the only one in South Carolina in which teacher candidates have the option of completing the final internship as a first year teacher of record in a partner school. The added benefit of beginning coursework toward an M.A. degree is that it allows candidates to obtain a graduate degree with an additional licensure area within a year.
"I remember watching my cooperating teacher as a senior at Furman and admiring the way she interacted with her students. She has the perfect balance of fun, rigor, high-interest activities, and solid teaching in her classroom. She mentored me through my first few years of teaching and still helps me whenever I need her."
-- Kathryn Misenheimer '09, Spanish/ESOL teacher, Teacher of the Year 2013-2014, Dorman High School, Spartanburg 6 School District
As part of our Teacher to Teacher Residency Program, Furman University has formal partnerships with local school districts to provide multiple levels of support and supervision for teacher candidates. University supervisors provide
guidance on translating theory to practice, and district mentors provide direction in understanding the local community, school, and classroom, in addition to guidance on translating theory to practice. University supervisors and district mentors collaborate to provide feedback for teacher growth and development.
Paid Internships in partner school districts
"I have always been impressed by the enthusiasm and passion I've seen
from Furman student teachers. They have a strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction and assessment as well as a willingness to do whatever is necessary to support students. They are strong communicators and are eager for feedback."
-- Nicky Andrews Principal, Greenville Middle Academy, M.A. in School Leadership, '02
Qualified candidates can pursue the option of completing their student teaching internship while employed as a first-year teacher (with salary and benefits) in one of our partner school districts. They can also pursue the option of an M.A. from Furman at the same time, typically completing their graduate studies within fifteen months of their graduation from Furman.
