Education Professor Dr. George B. Lipscomb has been teaching at Furman since 2002. A former middle and high school social studies teacher, he currently instructs elementary and secondary social studies methods, curriculum and technology, and geography among other courses. He is active in social studies education at the local, state, and national level and is currently on the executive board of the College and University Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies. Dr. Lipscomb has done work in New Zealand schools and has taken students to the country four times for May Experience programs.

Teaching Internship

Designed for candidates enrolled in Furman's extended program. The course provides candidates with opportunities to plan and implement instruction, manage the classroom, evaluate student progress, communicate with other professionals and parents, and develop as professional educators under the supervision and mentoring of university and public school personnel.


Masters Seminar in Education

Course integrates knowledge and underlying concepts from the core courses in the master?s program with the student?s concentration. Participants will demonstrate ability to synthesize previous coursework and to understand the holistic nature of an advanced degree in education. Emphasis is on oral and written communication, as well as use of information technology.


What Makes a Great Teacher

An examination of teachers in challenging work conditions with a focus on what factors make a teacher great." Particular attention will be paid to teachers working with students living in poverty. May Experience ONLY. 2 credits."


Social Studies in Grades PK-6

Knowledge of the elementary and middle school social studies curriculum, teaching strategies and materials, and field-based application in area.


Integrating Curriculum & Tech

Provides background for integrating instruction and technology across curriculum. In field-based teams, candidates explore models/theories of curriculum integration and use the thematic approach to unit development. Focus on developing connections across disciplines of science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, and related arts. May only be enrolled as a part of the Senior Block.


Tching Soc Studies Grds 9-12

Provides in-depth investigation of the methods associated with teaching social studies on the secondary level. Special emphasis placed on how the social sciences differ from other disciplines, and how differences affect curricular and pedagogical strategies.


Crtcl Issues in Secondary Ed

Designed for senior level secondary and PK-12 language teacher candidates enrolled in the Senior Block. Provides candidates with opportunities to examine significant issues in secondary schools including: classroom management techniques and educational technology.


Practicum in Teaching

Designed for senior level teacher candidates. Provides opportunities to apply theory and evidence-based practice in the classroom under the supervision of Furman faculty and mentorship of master teacher.


Practicum: Secondary Teaching

Provides candidates with opportunities to apply theory and evidence-based practice in the classroom under the supervision of Furman faculty and mentorship of a master teacher.


Principles of Geography

Regional examination of the complex relationship between humans and the environment in an increasingly globalized world. Focus on interconnections between diverse regions of the world.


Geography and Sports

Intersection of geography and sports with particular attention to the increasing globalization of sports worldwide. Focus will be primarily on baseball, basketball, and soccer, but will also explore a number of other modern sports. Cultural impact of modern sports, the diffusion of sport around the world, the economic impact of sports internationally, and struggle in finding spaces for recreational activities.
