Troy M. Terry, Director of Graduate Studies in Education, came to Furman in July 2005. His entire career spans a gamut of educational experiences including teaching high school English and Drama, and serving as a middle school assistant principal and an elementary principal. Dr. Terry is a literacy and service-learning advocate and has presented at county, state and regional meetings on project-based learning, public school law,integrated literacy programs in the elementary school, creating an exemplary writing school, service learning, curriculum integration, teaming, reading and writing across the curriculum, grant writing, and humanities-based curriculum. Dr. Terry has authored or edited three publications on curriculum integration: ARISE – Integrating Service Learning into the Curriculum 9-12; ARISE: Service Learning at the Middle Level; and REACH: Integrating the Collaborative Humanities and is currently working on a text on project-based learning. Dr. Terry completed a doctoral dissertation on the 21st Century Learning Grant's after-school programs and how they affect individual student achievement on the SC PACT test in 2004. Dr. Terry's first experience at Furman was serving as an adjunct instructor of service-learning methodology. He has been recognized by a Furman University summa cum laude graduate as a "Master Teacher". Currently, Dr. Terry oversees all phases of the Graduate program and serves as a professor of School Leadership. Continued research interests include Public School Administration and the Law, Project-based learning in partnership with the Riley Institute at Furman, and Literacy.

Masters Seminar in Education

Course integrates knowledge and underlying concepts from the core courses in the master?s program with the student?s concentration. Participants will demonstrate ability to synthesize previous coursework and to understand the holistic nature of an advanced degree in education. Emphasis is on oral and written communication, as well as use of information technology.


Tch Rdng in the Content Areas

This course is designed for prospective and in-service elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers. It will provide opportunities for an in-depth study of teaching reading and writing in various subject matter areas and present skills and strategies that facilitate reading, writing, and learning with content textbooks, content-area authentic texts, and other media.


Designing & Implmtg Curriculum

Study of the school curriculum including objectives, current issues, experimentation, and change. Perspective and methodology to equip the teacher, administrator, or supervisor to participate effectively in curriculum development.


Schools and the Law

A course designed to help potential school administrators understand the current concepts of school law and their practical import for educators, students, and the community served by the school. Attention is given to Constitutional legal principles, case law, and legislation at all levels of government.


Leadership for Social Justice

A course designed to provide a contemporary and prospective examination of the social, cultural, political, economical and philosophical contexts from which the current issues that affect schools and schooling have evolved. Students will be introduced to a variety of ideas, values, and beliefs surrounding social life, cultural identity, educational reform, and some historical practices. They will then be challenged to explore these constructs from numerous, diverse, and changing perspectives.


Adv Smnr in Edctnl Ldrshp & Rs

This course serves as the culminating experience in the Ed.S. Program. Seminar meetings will be held to share experiences, engage in discussions related to practice in educational leadership/administration and student services, and develop plans and policies for the individual school districts in which the candidates are serving.
