Faculty Recruitment
Hiring new faculty is the most important responsibility of a department Chair. Faculty members typically have long tenures at the institution. Their effects on academic programs, students and the institution as a whole are far-reaching. There cannot be too much time, effort and scrutiny invested in faculty recruitment and hiring.
Furman seeks to promote the growth of a diverse faculty. Every effort should be made to recruit highly qualified women and minorities for tenure-track and contingent faculty positions.
Ultimately, the goal in faculty hiring is to recruit the very best among available candidates. The University wants new faculty members who are highly educated, who will be excellent teachers and scholars, and who are committed to service and the mission of a liberal arts college.
File 157.9 in the Policies and Procedures is the policy statement for recruitment of new faculty.
