Global Experience Communication Studies Furman University

At Furman, a Communication Studies degree is about more than just classroom lectures. We offer students exciting opportunities to challenge their communication and critical thinking skills through our May Experience and faculty-led study away programs.

May Experience

In the last three weeks of May, students can opt to participate in our May Experience program, worth two credits. This program offers Communication Studies majors the chance to explore interesting new topics in their field. Previous May Experience programs have included documentary filmmaking, travel writing, and a look into the free speech movement in San Francisco. In 2013, our May Experience program focused on the rhetoric of social activism: an intensive study of the discourses of social activism, including study and application of the techniques of textual reconstruction, editing, and criticism, as well as interviewing and oral history. Participating students traveled to several scholarly centers as part of the program, including Yuen Social Activist Archive at UC Berkeley, King Institute at Stanford, and the Freedom Archives in San Francisco.

Study away

Your experience as a Communication Studies major also includes the chance to spend a semester working and studying abroad. In 2013, our students served as interns in Brussels, a government and policy center often referred to as "the capital city of Europe." Students also participated in classes at Vesalius College and experienced life as locals in flats located in the city center. In spring 2015, our faculty-led study away program will be based in Scotland, while spring 2016 will allow students to explore Italy.
