In December eight intrepid Furman students took part in the inaugural college Latin translation contest sponsored by The Classical Association of the Middle West and South. Elias Eells and Mary Grace Palmer competed at the intermediate level, while Harrison Brink, Molly Clark, Lexie Harvey, Samuel Mao, Brett Sullivan, and Kimbell Vincent-Dobbins undertook the advanced exam. Thirty colleges from the United States and Canada participated. Prizes, including cash, book awards, and awards of commendation, will be announced in February.

The Classical Association of the Middle West and South is an organization for Classics (Latin and Greek) teachers at all levels, undergraduate and graduate students, and anyone else who enjoys learning about the world of classical antiquity. Learn more about CAMWS here.

The local exam was orchestrated by Dr. Anne Leen, with the enthusiastic support of Drs. Chris Blackwell and Randall Childree and our administrative assistant, Amy Cockman.

Check out action shots of students translating Latin, and celebrating afterwards at the department pizza party.
