Prospective Biology Students Furman University

How would you like to engage in laboratory research? Study evolutionary biology in the Galapagos Islands? Or present your own paper at a national conference? At Furman, you'll have an opportunity to do it all.

The Furman Biology department can prepare you for a career in the life sciences. We provide our students with one-on-one instruction, world-class research facilities and a broad range of studies. The best part? You won't have to share lab space with graduate students because we're committed to undergraduate research. You'll even have the opportunity to study plants and animals in their ecosystems, taking study away courses in locations like the Galapagos Islands, the Rocky Mountains, and the Florida Everglades.

Founded on the central principles of the liberal arts, our program also allows you to pursue your wide-ranging interests and ideas. You'll explore how society, economics, and politics impact scientific research. And by the time you graduate, you'll be able to examine complex problems from multiple angles.

Program overview

We offer both the bachelor of science degree and the flexible bachelor of arts degree, which allows students to tailor the major to suit their professional interests. Classes cover a broad range of specializations within biology, and all feature hands-on laboratory and/or field components. Learn with us.

All Biology majors at Furman University take the ETS Major Field Test in Biology during their senior year prior to graduation. This test is a comprehensive undergraduate assessment designed to measure the critical knowledge and understanding obtained by students in Biology.

The tests go beyond the measurement of factual knowledge but also help us to evaluate students' ability to analyze and solve problems, understand relationships and interpret material from the field of Biology. Furthermore, these tests enable us to evaluate our students' performance and compare our program's effectiveness to programs at similar institutions nationwide. As you can see from the graphs, Furman students perform very well when compared to students nationwide!
