Walker Stinnette Furman University

Class of 2014
Hometown: Columbia, S.C.

I took a May Experience course in Costa Rica that focused on tropical ecology. Our group went on walks through the rainforests and got a closer look at all the things that we studied in class.

Life as a Biology Major

  • Why did you decide to be a biology major?

I always knew I wanted to major in science. There's just so much you can do with a biology degree. I thought it would give me a lot of professional opportunities.

  • Best experience in the department:

I took a May Experience course in Costa Rica that focused on tropical ecology. We went on walks through the rainforests and learned all about the things that we'd been studying in class.

  • Favorite professor:

Dr. Travis Perry. I went to Costa Rica with him, and he made it an amazing experience.

  • Career goals:

I'm interested in city planning and environmental research. But I'm trying to be open-minded before determining my career path.

  • Internship experience:

Right now, I'm doing research with Dr. Dennis Haney on water quality. We're analyzing the water quality of streams throughout Greenville County.

Helpful Tips

  • Choosing a major:

Don't rush into it. You don't have to decide your major until the end of your sophomore year. Take a couple general education requirements and figure out what you're interested in.

  • Studying:

Take advantage of your time between classes. It's easy enough to go back to your dorm, but if you go to the library, you actually get a lot done.

  • Getting involved on campus:

Don't overcommit yourself. Choose what you're interested in, and stick to that. There are plenty of opportunities for you to make a difference on campus.

  • Making friends:

Getting involved is a good way to meet people. I met all of my friends through various student organizations. You're not going to meet anybody if you're just sitting in your room.
