I am a medievalist by training and have published one book and several articles on topics ranging from 4th-century ivories to 14th-century manuscripts. I am also interested in art theory, especially ideas of beauty and creativity.

Study of art and architecture in Italy from c. 1300 to c. 1590 and art and architecture in Northern Europe from c. 1400 - 1500. Style, iconography, and cultural context considered.


Arts of Baroque & Rococo

Art and architecture of the 17th and early 18th centuries in Western Europe.


Arts of Pre-Columbian Society

Survey of art and architecture of Pre-Columbian societies in Mesoamerica and South America. Consideration of style, iconography and aesthetics and of the functions of art and architecture within each culture.


Arts of African Societies

A survey of the arts of African societies across the continent, with emphasis on traditional arts.


Art Criticism

Introduction to the history of art theory from ancient Greece to the present. The principles and practices of art criticism, with exercises in analytical and critical writing.


Abortion Issues & Controversy

Abortion touches core beliefs about the nature of the human person, human freedom and rights, human relationships, and the right ordering of society. This seminar will consider abortion through various disciplines in order to arrive at a deeper understanding of the issues and the controversies around this phenomenon.
