Africa 2011 Trip

The Africa Study Away Program Spring 2011 integrated the humanities and social sciences to better understand some of the key historical and contemporary issues of Southern Africa. The curriculum included four courses from the departments of History, Economics, Psychology and Sociology. The structure of the program includes an intensive three weeks of in-class preparation on campus prior to departure for an eight to nine week travel study in South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. Time in country was spent listening to guest lecturers, faculty lectures, visiting local agencies, touring key landmarks in each of the respective countries. Following the study away, an additional three weeks of class was held on campus which allowed for reflection, incorporation of materials and knowledge gained abroad.

The plan is for the program to go every Spring term thereafter (2013, 2015, etc.). Please contact Dr. Kristy Maher in the Sociology Department with any questions regarding future programs and any related application deadlines.
