Johannesburg to Gaborone, Botswana — Day 12

Gaborone — Day 13

Meeting with HIV/AIDS peer education group at Jwaneng mine. They are workers in the mine who have been trained to serve as educators, counselors and peer advisors for their fellow workers around issues of HIV/AIDS.

Visit to Kudu Cultural Centre in Molepolole, a town approximately thirty miles outside of Gaborone. We visited a peasant farmstead on the outskirts of Molepolole where the owners demonstrated plowing techniques and talked with us about economic survival strategies. Jes Petersen delivered a lecture on culture in Botswana, and then we received a demonstration of traditional dance styles by a local student cultural dance troupe.
Tour of Jwaneng diamond mine.

Gaborone — Day 14

Briefing at U.S. Embassy on conditions in Botswana from Karen Monsey, Public Relations Officer, Mario Medina, Environmental and Health Affairs Officer, and Kristi Agor, Political and Economic Officer.

Returned to the Kudu Cultural Centre in Molepolole and hiked to a historical site where an early African kingdom had settled on a hill and fought off a group of Afrikaner commandos in the late nineteenth century. We did this with the uncle of the local Bakwena traditional authority.

We then visited the local Kgotla, or traditional court, where this same uncle of the local authority delivered a lecture on how the court functioned.
