Academic Advising at Furman

Welcome to Advising

"An excellent advisor does the same for the student’s entire curriculum what the excellent teacher does for one course."

Academic advising plays an integral role in the mission of teaching and learning at Furman University. As a result of advising, we want students to demonstrate what they know, are able to do, and what they value and appreciate. Advisors teach students to:
  • value the learning process
  • apply decision-making strategies
  • put the college experience into perspective
  • set priorities and evaluate actions
  • develop critical thinking and learning skills
  • make informed choices
The Furman model for academic advising is one of partnership. The student and advisor share responsibility for crafting educational studies and experiences that fit student goals, and offer opportunities not only for intellectual growth but also for development of personal responsibility, independence, and making contributions to the larger community. Ultimately, the student is held responsible for choices and decisions made.

Visit us in the Administration Building, Room 206 Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
