Experience Britain
Our semester-long study away program in the British Isles is extremely popular among majors and non-majors. In addition to seeing tons of plays, you'll take classes with members of the Royal Shakespeare Company, visit historic sites like Dublin's Abbey Theatre, and attend shows on London's West End. Each year, the trip has a slightly different focus depending on the professor leading the trip. In the past, students have focused on costume design, architecture, and emerging styles of theatre.
Application process
Want to explore the British Isles? One of our faculty members co-leads the students to Britain every other year, with our next trip slated for fall 2014. To apply, you’ll need to complete an application through the Office for Study Away and International Education and interview with our department in the spring of 2014. You’ll be notified in February 2014 if you have been accepted to the program. Our application will be available in fall 2013.
Explore the British Isles
The British Isles have a rich theatre history and this trip is a great way to experience the area. You’ll have the chance to visit Shakespeare’s home in Stratford and spend six weeks in London, with a number of shorter trips in between. The exact locations vary year to year depending on the dates of different theatre festivals. Typically, we take you to 11 different cities throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. At the end of the trip, there is also an optional 10-day independent travel period, which is not included in the program fees. In the past, our students have used this time to travel to the Czech Republic, Iceland, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
Our accommodations
We stay in many different cities, generally in hotels or bed and breakfasts. Each hotel includes breakfast and a few provide dinner, as well. You’ll be given a food allowance to cover any meals the hotels don’t provide. In previous trips, we’ve stayed in dorms at St. Aidan’s College, Durham University, and Trinity College.
Our costs
At Furman, the cost of a study away program is the same as a semester on campus. Your fees cover your plane ticket to the United Kingdom, all your program-related travel once you’re there, hotel fees, entrances to historical sites, theatre performances, and a food allowance. It doesn’t include laundry, independent travel, schoolbooks, or souvenirs. It also doesn’t cover the cost of a laptop or tablet computer, which we don’t require, but recommend for homework.
