Major Requirements
(French, German, Spanish)
French Major
A major normally consists of at least eight courses beyond FRN 201 (21) and usually includes:
- FRN-215 (25), 331 (31), 332 (32), 333 (33) and
- at least four literature courses numbered 300 or greater in French
German Studies Major
A major normally consists of eight courses in German Studies beyond GRM-201 (21) and must include:
- GRM-215 (GER-25) or 301 (49)
- GRM-220 (26) or 320 (50)
- GRM-470 (75) or 503 (80), and
- at least five of the following courses: GRM-305 (40), 332 (32), 335 (34), 336 (41), 337 (55), 405 (36, 414 (42), 415 (51), 430 (56).
Spanish Major
A major normally consists of at least eight courses beyond SPN-201 (21) and usually includes:
- SPN-215 (25) and 331 (31)
- SPN 220 (26) or 240 (27)
- SPN-332 (32) or 361 (37) and
- at least two additional literature courses numbered 300 or greater in Spanish
All majors in the department must enroll in at least one course in their major language during both their junior and senior years. All majors are strongly encouraged to participate in a study away program before their senior year as well.
English for Speakers of Other Languages Concentration
To satisfy the requirements for the concentration in English for Speakers of Other Languages, students must complete:
- EDU-501, ENG-362, LNG-210, MLL- 350, and
- two more courses from at least two of the four groups listed below:
Cultural Analysis:
A course selected in consultation with the concentration advisor that
addresses the culture associated with a specific language. For example,
if a student is interested in working in China then one of several
courses addressing aspects of Chinese culture might be considered as
appropriate under this rubric.
Analysis of English:
ENG-361 (History of the English Language)
Linguistic Analysis:
LNG-220, 230, 305
Analysis of Modern Languages:
FRN-405, GRM-405, SPN-405
