Course Furman University

Capstone course

Issues of Latin America (LAS 470), the LAS capstone seminar, is required of all concentrators. The seminar's thematic focus varies from year to year, depending upon the research expertise of the instructor(s). Past courses have focused on sustainable development, current politics, notions of Latin American identity, race and ethnicity in Latin America, and the intersection of literature and history. Regardless of the thematic focus, the course always adopts an interdisciplinary approach. The course is taught in English.

Elective courses

Elective coursework in the LAS interdisciplinary minor affords students a general approach to Latin America while also exploring Latin America's tremendous regional variation in much greater detail. Students have the flexibility of choosing among courses from Anthropology, Art, Biology, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, and Spanish. Several of the courses are offered in conjunction with Furman's study abroad programs in Latin America.

Language requirement

All LAS students must demonstrate competency in Spanish by completing Spanish 201 or equivalent proficiency.
