Dr. Si Pearman, III, a native of Columbia, SC, joined the Furman faculty in 1990. He is a 1987 Furman graduate and gained interest in the health sciences as a sophomore taking Dr. Pierce's Wellness Concepts course and was further influenced by the late Dr. Sandy Molnar, "The Optimal Man," for whom the Human Performance Laboratory is named. Pearman holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of North Carolina (1990) and a doctorate in public health from the USC School of Public Health (1995). Pearman has served as HSC Department Chair (2000-2001), Furman’s Assistant Academic Dean (2001-2006) and as Furman's Acting Associate Academic Dean (2006-2007). He was the 1999 recipient of Furman’s Meritorious Advising Award, a two time recipient of the Maiden Invitation Teaching Award given by multi-cultural students, and was the 1995 recipient of the College Level Teaching Award given by the SCAHPERD. He was also a Torchbearer for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games. Pearman is the faculty advisor for Furman's Quaternion Club (a leadership honorary for men) and the faculty advisor for Pi Kappa Phi as well as an alumni faculty member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society. Pearman also serves on a number of university committees each year. In his spare time, he enjoys running, river rafting, zip lining, and studying theology and history, as well as hiking in the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Northwest states.
Dr. Pearman has published over a dozen scientific articles in national and international public health and exercise science journals on topics ranging from biochemical responses to exercise to adolescent health behaviors. Journals where his work has been published include "The Journal of Health Behavior," "The American Journal of College Health," "Sports Medicine Training, and Rehabilitation," "The International Journal of Sports Medicine," and "The Journal of Applied Sports Psychology" among others. Much of Dr. Pearman's professional work has included Furman students including dozens of professional presentations at state, regional and national conferences for the American Public Health Association and the American College of Sports Medicine among others. Pearman's research interests in adolescent health have involved him with studies with the Centers for Disease Control, the US Navy and Marines, as well as local public health programs.
