This information is intended to assist you in understanding the teacher
certification requirements that are: 1) part of the major in education;
or 2) part of the major in another academic department. You should use
this website as a supplement to the information in the Furman Catalog
and the Helmsman.
Furman prepares teachers and school administrators to:

Furman’s Teacher Education Program is committed to collaborative, interdependent efforts throughout the academic community. To achieve that objective, the Teacher Education Program is anchored in the university's commitment to the liberal arts, which encompass the social and natural sciences, fine arts, mathematics, and the humanities. The specific knowledge, skills, and dispositions expected of teacher certification candidates are detailed in the department’s Conceptual Framework.
The Teacher Education Program at Furman is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Additionally, the program is a member of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE), the National Network for Educational Renewal (NNER), and the South Carolina Network for Educational Renewal (SCNER).
