Mike's kids break out the squirt guns at mile 24 of the Atlanta Marathon. This is perhaps the only time he smiled during the second half of the race.

Mike began his teaching and coaching (cross country and baseball) career in 1993 and was subsequently selected into the NASA Classroom of the Future’s Master Teacher Cadre for his innovative physics/chemistry teaching and effective use of technology. He was also proud to be named Teacher of the Year for the Asheboro City School District in North Carolina in 1998.

Graduating from Furman with a chemistry degree, Mike continued his graduate studies (M.A.Ed.) at Wake Forest University focusing on the impact of user control and interface design on learning. His experience includes building data driven websites and portals at corporate and university levels, along with managing teams and projects. Mike received his Java Programmer Certification in 2001, but he's starting to dig PHP and Python.

Mike has enjoyed recent GIS project work and his mapping trip to Costa Rica so much, that he just completed his second masters (this one in GIS), through Penn State University.

Mike team-taught Interdisciplinary Studies 59 (E-merging Learning Technologies) with Diane Boyd in the spring of '08 and taught SCI-101, Mission to Mars in the fall of '08, and FYS Mars - Shoulders of Giants in the fall of '09 and '10. He is currently teaching Intro to GIS (Spring 2011 and 2012).

He's working with Diane Boyd and Drew Woten on web-based GIS project to map and analyze Hurricane Katrina commemorations.

His favorite pastime is hanging out with his wife and daughters. He also enjoys trail running and discovering new music and recently started mountain biking and playing the guitar again.
