She worked for several years as an accountant with Price Waterhouse in Greenville, SC and in Winston-Salem, NC. Professor Summers left public accounting to become the Accounting Manager of Specialty Retail Concepts, Inc., a publicly traded franchiser of specialty food concepts. In 1987, she began graduate school at The University of Georgia, earning first a Masters of Accountancy degree with a federal tax specialization, and then a Ph.D. with an accounting major and organizational behavior minor. Upon completion of the Ph.D. degree, Professor Summers spent seven years on the School of Business Administration faculty at Lander University.

Professor Summers began teaching at Furman in 1999. For the past three years she has spearheaded the Furman/Lilly VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program in Greenville. This program, consisting of student, faculty, and staff volunteers, provides free electronic income tax return preparation for hundreds of low-income taxpayers each year. Her scholarly work includes publications in education and business journals and she is active in professional organizations at both the local and national levels.

Professor Summers enjoys spending time reading, hiking and traveling. She also enjoys watching her two boys, ages 12 and 16, play hockey and lacrosse. Any extra time is spent accounting for the collections taken up by Dr. Karwan (to fund his triplets’ college education) and Dr. Smythe (to fund his chocolate habit).
