Clubs and Activities

At this point, 4 student organizations provide other opportunities to meet business professionals, learn about careers and assume leadership positions.

The Accounting Society gives students opportunities to learn about the profession, obtain an understanding of the many opportunities within accounting firms for both accounting and non-accounting majors, network with potential employers and accountants in a variety of fields, learn about graduate school opportunities and socialize with their peers outside the classroom. Meetings are held several times during the year (except during winter term) and annual dues are $15. Attendance by accounting majors or anyone considering the major is highly recommended; but ALL business majors are invited to join, as many accounting firms are hiring non-accounting majors to fill a variety of positions in consulting services, internal auditing and management information systems.

The Investments Club was started in February of 1988 when the trustees transferred $100,000 of Furman's endowment funds to the club. The first purchase was Duke Power stock. Between 1988 and November of 2000, capital gains, dividends, interest, and net call premiums pushed the value of the account to over $350,000. As the club had never distributed any earnings or gains back to the general endowment, the administration requested that they make a $105,000 transfer in November of 2000, bringing the value of the assets down to approximately $250,000.

The club is currently meeting approximately once a month. Students study stocks and make suggestions as to which stocks to buy, which ones to sell and which ones to write (sell) calls on. After a student suggests an action and makes a case backed up by data and analysis, club members vote whether or not to follow the recommendation. The club periodically invites speakers, faculty and other professionals to address the membership on various investment topics. They are also working on a web site that will inform students about the Investment Club's activities and portfolio. The club is open to everyone, regardless of prior knowledge or experience.
