Curses, Cures, and Clinics: Global Health Perspectives
Curses, Cures, and Clinics: Global Health will offer you the opportunity to learn about health and health care in the local community as well as around the world. You will be exposed to the patterns of distribution of disease and mortality around the world while examining the cultural dimensions of health, disease, and healing.
- During the Fall 2013 semester, you will take FYW 1176: Curses, Cures, and Clinics: A Global Health Seminar (which fulfills the first-year writing seminar graduation requirement) and will examine the sociological dimensions of health, illness, and healing in different parts of the world. You will learn about major epidemics around the world (i.e. HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria) while discovering different models of health care delivery systems and learning about the role of international health care organizations, NGOs, and social movements in promoting health.
Engaging Global Health Beyond the Classroom
Curses, Cures, and Clinics will provide you with the opportunity to visit agencies such as the
Greenville Free Medical Clinic or the
Triune Mercy Center, which provide health care to the poor and underserved of Greenville, where you will gain insight into the human context of health care. You will see firsthand some of the alternative healing practices at use and will interact with local providers of these diverse forms of healing.
