What is Undergraduate Research?

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Internships provides support to faculty in their endeavors to engage students in collaborative research and creative activity. Resources are available to assist faculty in learning more about mentoring students and facilitating the student research relationship. The Office also provides support for poster fairs, campus conferences, and other activities that showcase student research/creative activity and collects data on research participation throughout campus.

What do we mean by UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH at Furman?

Scholary projects in which both faculty and students are collaborative partners in examining, creating, and sharing new knowledge or works in ways consistent with practices in the discipline
  • Laboratory research in sciences
  • Text-based research in the humanities - both primary and secondary sources
  • Fields research in the natural and social sciences and in some of the humanities, such as history and communication studies
  • Creative projects in fine arts and humanities

WHY should a student consider spending a summer working with a professor on research project?

To immerse oneself into a research project results in not only learning more about the subject of study, but also further develops critical thinking skills by learning more about the research process and constructing solutions to problems. Students apply knowledge gained in the classroom to real situationsand learn to work both independently and with teams. These are skills and abilities that can be applied to all disciplines.

This experience also helps students to clarify career paths and goals for graduate and professional education.

HOW does a student get involved in collaborative faculty-student research?

Talk to professors in departments of interest. Opportunities are available in all areas of study. If you don't know which professors to approach, contact Timothy Fehler in the Office of Undergraduate Research and Internships (294.3607) and he can make recommendations to you.

Funding for full-time summer research activity is available from:
  • The Furman Advantage and Hipp Fellowship Programs
  • SCICU Research Fellowship
  • External grants awarded to faculty (consult with specific faculty for availability)
  • Department funds (in some departments)
