At Furman, we're committed to leading our community—and our peers—in a more sustainable direction. To accomplish that, we have joined other universities and colleges in an effort to promote sustainable practices.
Presidents' Climate Commitment
Former President David E. Shi was a charter signatory of the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment in 2007. This pledge provides a framework and support for higher education institutions to eliminate greenhouse gases on campuses throughout the United States. By joining more than 670 college presidents, Furman is committed to becoming carbon neutral. Learn more about the commitment.
Sustainability Tracking Assessment Ratings System
Furman is a charter participant of the Sustainability Tracking Assessment Ratings System. STARS is a voluntary self-reporting system that helps schools evaluate their campus sustainability in three categories: Education and Research, Operations, and Planning, Administration and Engagement. The publicly available report includes details of Furman’s progress across all areas, ranging from the percentage of courses focused on or related to sustainability to our recycling rate to the role of sustainability in our investment practices and policies.
