Startalk Furman Chinese Camp
July 6-20, 2014
Startalk Furman Chinese Camp (Startalk FCC) is a two-week intensive Chinese language summer camp for high school students from all over the U.S. who wish to become more conversational in Chinese. Students will live on Furman's beautiful 750-acre campus, take language courses, participate in engaging cultural activities to reinforce language acquisition and be paired with Chinese students in Suzhou, China with whom they will practice their language skills via webcam every evening. The program is open to rising 10-12th graders who have taken at least one year of Chinese or the equivalent. Students will be expected to uphold a language pledge to speak Chinese from 9AM-5PM while on the program; classes will also be taught entirely in Chinese by teachers brought in from Suzhou, China. Even after the program, students will have an opportunity to continue informal language exchanges with their language partners and friends in Suzhou.
Startalk is funded by grants from the National Strategic Language Initiative (NSLI) and run by Furman University's Asian Studies Department. All expenses on Furman's campus will be covered by Startalk FCC, as will a program hiking trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains and a trip to downtown Greenville. Students are responsible for transportation to Furman or to the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. Applications will be available online in the spring; final admission decisions will be made by mid-May.
Applications will be available on the Asian Studies website after March 1, 2014.
