Software Support
Everyone at Furman University understands that information technology is critical to their work. These information technologies include desktop application software and hardware, network-enabled applications, network software and hardware, our campus cabling infrastructure, and the larger world of the Internet. Ultimately, everyone at Furman requires a unique information environment tailored for their work. Of course, no institution can afford to support completely unique environments for each individual. However, the costs for technology service, support and training needs can be reduced when there is a reliable and consistent information infrastructure.
Information Technology Services is working to provide an institutional information infrastructure that gives the University a strong foundation for meeting the diverse needs of departments and individuals. Software support is a critical part of our information infrastructure.
We have prepared this information to help identify those applications that work well within our institutional information infrastructure. We also want to outline the levels of support members of our campus community can expect from our central Information Technology Services organization. Working with the university's Information Technology Advisory Council (ITAC), we expect to continue to develop and refine these guidelines.

Categories of Software Support
To help better define how well selected software fits in our institution's information technology architecture, we have identified levels of supported software for software installed on desktop computers and laptops. These levels range from extensive support for software, which works well within an institutional context and is used by the broadest campus constituencies (baseline), to support for innovative software, which may be used by a single individual.
Baseline – Software provided and/or fully supported by ITS.
Specialty – Academic or administrative software required for curriculum or operations. Varying levels of support offered by specialists.
Innovative – Academic or administrative software either used, or under consideration, in course design or evolving operations. Support is by specialists and may be limited due to time constraints.
Best effort - For all other software, information technology services staff will make a reasonable attempt to help, but makes no guarantees about a successful resolution.

Baseline - software provided and supported by ITS. Priority is given to University-owned systems, and student systems needing to connect to the campus network. Support for personally-owned systems is offered only when workload permits. Troubleshooting usually requires drop-off of systems to the IT Service Center.
