WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Dependents of full-time Furman employees are eligible to apply for
a Tuition Exchange award.
IS A SCHOLARSHIP GUARANTEED TO ALL ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS?
Dependents eligible for TE scholarships are
NOT guaranteed
a scholarship. TE scholarships are scholarships, not fringe benefits. Tuition
Exchange colleges and universities set their own policies and procedures for
awarding TE scholarships. Furman anticipates that we will attract more students
than we will send to other schools, therefore, we are limiting the number of
imports to the same number as exports. Other participating schools may adopt a
similar procedure.
HOW COMPETITIVE IS THE PROCESS?
Tuition exchange scholarships are competitive. Applicants must
first meet all regular admissions requirements of the college or university to
which they have applied. Only then may an applicant be considered for a TE
scholarship. More competitive institutions may receive more applications from
qualified students than they can accept. It is recommended that dependents apply
to several schools.
HOW DO I APPLY?
When you begin to complete your admissions applications to the
college and universities of your choice, contact the TE liaison officer in the Admission Office at Furman to confirm participation by that institution. The
liaison officer will send you a preliminary application for the TE program to be
completed and returned to the Admission office. From this preliminary
application, the TE liaison officer will prepare and submit the TE
Application/Certification Form to the liaison officers at the institutions to
which you are applying.
The liaison officer at the institutions to which you apply will
notify you that you application has been accepted or rejected by returning
completed copies of the TE Application/Certification Form to you and to the
liaison officer at Furman . Notification of acceptance into the TE program will
be at the end of March. You should notify Furman's TE liaison officer if you
accept the TE scholarship.
ARE THERE ANY FEES FOR THE TUITION EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIP?
Each student who is offered a tuition exchange scholarship and
accepts the scholarship at a participating institution must pay an annual $35.00
Tuition Exchange, Inc. fee.
ARE TUITION EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIPS RENEWABLE?
Students must meet the institution's standards for academic
performance and personal conduct. The family member whose employment qualified
for eligibility for a TE scholarship must continue to meet the employing
institution's eligibility criteria. Renewal forms must be completed every
academic year to insure continued scholarship eligibility.
ARE TUITION EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR SUMMER SCHOOL
OR FOREIGN STUDY PROGRAMS?
Each institution is required to set their own policies and
procedures. Furman allows the Tuition Exchange scholarship to be applied toward
the Furman foreign study expenses, but TE funds are not available for summer
school expenses.
CAN A STUDENT RECEIVE FURMAN'S CASH BENEFIT IN ADDITION TO THE
TUITION EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIP?
Students who are granted a tuition exchange scholarship at another
institution cannot apply for the Furman Cash Tuition benefit. The Furman Cash
Tuition benefit is available to students who are enrolled at an institution that
is not a member of the Tuition Exchange, Inc. or the Associated Colleges of the
South (ACS) tuition exchange program. Information and applications for the
Furman Cash Tuition benefit are available in the Human Resources office.
WHAT IS THE DOLLAR VALUE OF THE TUITION EXCHANGE
SCHOLARSHIP?
Most TE scholarships cover full tuition, but not special fees,
course overloads, or room and board charges.. For 2002-2003, institutions that
charge more than $18,600 for tuition are permitted to award less than their full
tuition, but not less than $18,600. Some member institutions reduce their TE
scholarships by the amount of federal and state grants awarded to a student,
whether or not these are based on financial needs. Some states require that
special fees be charged to out-of-state students. The TE
Application/Certification Form notifying you of your award should provide
specific details, but if you are confused, seek clarification by asking
questions before you accept the scholarship.
ARE TUITION EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIPS TAXABLE?
Under current IRS guidelines, the Tuition Exchange awards are not
taxable.
