How to Apply For Summer Financial Aid

Please be advised that summer is included in the 2012-2013 academic year (fall, spring, summer). To be considered for federal financial aid, you must have filed the 2012-13 FAFSA before June 30, 2013. To be considered for loans for summer term classes, you must have federal loan eligibility remaining from the current academic year and be enrolled at least half-time.  There are two (2) types of loans for which you may apply for the 2013 summer terms:
  • Federal Direct Stafford Loan: If you have eligibility remaining from the current academic year and are enrolled at least half-time, you may be awarded a federal loan for summer. For more information on loan limits and the loan process, please click here. The Parent PLUS loan is also available to students who are enrolled at least half-time. PLUS loan information and online applications are available at www.studentloans.gov.
  • Alternative Loan: Alternative loans are issued by private lenders. For a list of lenders and other information about alternative loans, please click here.
If you are applying for a Federal Direct Stafford loan for summer, you must be enrolled at least half-time or six (6) credits and you must complete the following:
  • 2012-13 FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Include Furman's Title IV code - 003434.
To qualify for summer funding from the Pell Grant program, you must have enough Pell funds left over from the previous fall and spring semesters. You could be eligible for a summer Pell Grant for the following reasons:
  • You did not attend the fall or spring semesters

                        or

  • You chose to not utilize all of your Pell Grant aid during those academic terms.
Financial Aid students who take summer classes should contact Financial Aid to see if they are eligible to receive Pell funds.
