GREENVILLE, S.C.—Furman University’s Music by the Lake Summer Concert Series, a tradition in Greenville since 1968, will begin Thursday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s amphitheater with a performance by the Lakeside Concert Band.
“The Magic of Andrew Lloyd Webber” is the theme of the opening concert with Furman professor Leslie W. Hicken directing the Lakeside Concert Band.
There will be a total of 11 concerts in the series this summer, and all are free and open to the public. Concerts begin each Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and will take place through Aug. 4. The July 14 date includes a pre-concert at 7 p.m.
All concerts will be held in the amphitheater except for the June 23 “Rhapsody in Blue” concert, which will take place in McAlister Auditorium. Those attending can bring picnic baskets, lawn chairs, beach towels and well-behaved, leashed animals to the amphitheater. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed.
The rain location will be McAlister Auditorium for the June 9 concert and those that follow.
A variety of musical genres will be featured including Big Band, jazz, international, contemporary, bluegrass, marches and orchestral favorites.
Ensembles and bands performing this summer will include the Carolina Youth Symphony, nief-norf percussion ensemble, Swing Shift Combo, Greenville Chorale, Greenville Brass Quintet, The Andy Carlson Band, S.C. Suzuki Institute Fiddlers and The Greenville Textile Band. The Lakeside Concert Band will perform at five of the concerts.
At each concert one member of the audience will receive a picnic basket filled with goodies.
