Vaughn Crowetipton began his tenure with Furman in August 2003. He serves the university as Associate Vice President for Spiritual Life, University Chaplain, and Associate Professor of Religion. His expertise is in New Testament and early Christian backgrounds, specifically biblical manuscripts. He teaches courses in in both New Testament and offers first year seminars. He began his collegiate career at The Ohio State University but graduated from Mississippi College with a Bachelor in Religion and English. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Southern Seminary and a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Baylor University. He has also has also done postdoctoral study at Oxford University.
Formerly the senior pastor at Auburn First Baptist Church in Auburn, Alabama, Dr. CroweTipton also taught in the religion department at Auburn University, as well as Mercer University, Brewton-Parker College and Macon College. He has served as senior pastor at Northwest Baptist Church in Ardmore, OK, senior chaplain at Methodist Children's Home in Macon, GA, and pastor of Loveview Baptist Church in Hillsboro, TX. He has published numerous articles including recent articles in the widely acclaimed Feasting on the Word series and the new Feasting on the Gospels. He has edited several books and serves as a conference speaker.
His wife, Beverly CroweTipton (’81) is also a minister who serves in a local United Methodist Congregation as an associate Pastor. They have two children: Jared, who is a current Furman student and Abby, a high School Jr. Vaughn enjoys athletics, is a working photographer, and is currently learning to play the guitar.
