Study Away Scholarships

Furman University offers need-based study away scholarships intended to aid students who otherwise would not be able to engage in the study away experience.  These are partial scholarships but in no case will they subsidize a student's entire study away program.

Students who are participating in a Furman faculty-led semester or May Experience study away program or a partnering exchange program are eligible to apply.  Participants in affiliate and non-Furman study away programs are not eligible for these scholarships. Students who intend to apply for a Study Away Scholarship should file the FAFSA form, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, by March 15 of the academic year prior to applying for a study away program.

The Bony Hampton Peace, George I. Alden, Class of 1985, Walter J. Heacock, and Office for Study Away and International Education study away scholarships are awarded according to the criteria listed below:

  1. Acceptance and paid deposit to a Furman faculty-led study away or exchange program.
  2. Financial need.
  3. Academic performance.
  4. Compelling rationale for study away, as demonstrated through a personal essay.
  5. Submission of the scholarship application to the Office for Study Away and International Education (Trone Center, Suite 209) by the application deadline.

The Scholarship Application can be downloaded here:

Application Deadline EXTENDED: February 8, 2013.

Students whose participation in a study away program is contingent on receiving a scholarship award may request an early review of their scholarship application to determine what need-based aid they might qualify for if they are accepted into a study away program.
