Philosophy Department Academic Award Recipients

Anna Bower

Anna Bower, a Philosophy major with a minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, has been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, and the Senior Order.  She won the Winston Babb Award for being the top female leader in her class.  She has served as the Student Coordinator for the orientation staff, the Head Recruitment Counselor for PanHellenic Council, a leader of the Global Issues Forum, a volunteer for the Julie Valentine Center, and the producer and organizer of the Vagina Monologues.  During a semester abroad, Anna did research for a member of the European Parliament on EU-Turkey relations and women’s equality.  She is a finalist for a Fulbright award to teach English in Turkey next year.  She is currently completing work on a senior honors thesis on Foucault, Feminism, and Pornography that she will defend this spring.

Emily Wirzba

Emily’s keen mind and strong heart have proved equal to the task of grappling with the major figures and difficult questions in the philosophical corpus.  From Confucius to Derrida, she has wrestled with difficult texts to win from them their insights, as she develops her own, into the indispensable, interconnected questions:

•          how does one live a fully human life?

•          what does it mean that we are moral, social, caring, rational beings?

•          what is a just society?

•          what is my responsibility as I lend my shoulder to the world-historic task of creating a world in which all people, all life, and the planet can thrive?

She will now engage these questions in Washington, doing policy and lobbying work with the Quakers on the issues of poverty and the environment.
