Summer 2010 HHMI Undergraduate Research Fellows involved in Furman Cougar Project (Ted Turner's Ladder Ranch, New Mexico)

In the photo from left to right are:  Mary Catherine Coppage (Junior, Art major, volunteer), Alex Viere (Sophomore, Biology major, 2010 HHMI Undergraduate Research Fellow), Furman Biology Professor Travis Perry, (1992 Furman alumnus), Megan Pitman (2007 Furman alumna), and Michael Jiang (Junior, Neuroscience major, 2009 HHMI Undergraduate Research Fellow). LM3 is a 145 lb male mountain lion (cougar) shown in the foreground.

The photo tells an interesting story of three separate cohorts of Furman students involved in the Furman Cougar Project and captures the progress the Project has made in research and education since 2005. Megan Pitman (2007) was the first undergraduate to work on the project in the summer of 2006, funded through a Furman Advantage Research Fellowship. Megan went on to earn her M.S. in Wildlife Biology at Clemson University while working on the Furman Cougar Project, and is now beginning her Ph.D. work at Clemson with Dr. Perry continuing as her advisor. Michael Jiang came to the project as an HHMI Undergraduate Research Fellow in the summer of 2009, presenting his research at a professional meeting this past spring. Michael returned to the Cougar Project again this summer funded through Furman’s HHMI-BRIDGES program. Alex Viere is also an HHMI Undergraduate Research Fellow who first joined the project in the summer of 2010. Mary Catherine heard about the project through Michael and volunteered her efforts this summer; given her keen interest in big cats, her efforts were generously rewarded!
