July 29, 2008 Furman Hosts International Research Conference

More than 65 student presentations were given on the Furman campus by students from across three continents including presenters from Furman, the University of Florida, the Universite’ Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris, France), the University Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil), the Universidade Federal de São Carlos, (São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil) and the Institute de Quimica-UNESP (Araraquara, São Paulo, Brazil). Forty of these presentations were from Furman students in four different departments including Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, and Health and Exercise Science.

Participation in this unique international undergraduate research conference on the Furman campus was outstanding with more than 150 students, faculty and staff viewing the posters, and 125 attending the “standing room only” Plenary Lecture given by Professor Lorenzo Stievano of the Universite’ Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6, Paris, France).  In addition to HHMI Science for Life students who traveled from UF to participate, UF, Furman and international students sponsored by NSF-REU and NIH-INBRE were also involved in this unique scientific exchange.
